Wyse — Keeper of Forgotten Roads

Most people underestimate Wyse the moment they see him.

An old traveler with tired eyes, weathered robes, too many books, and a walking staff worn smooth by decades on the road does not exactly inspire fear. That misconception tends to last right up until he casually recalls a dead empire’s language, disables an ancient ruin’s trap mechanism, or vanishes from danger with surprising speed for someone his age.

Wyse has spent most of his life chasing forgotten things.

Buried civilizations. Lost trade routes. Ruins swallowed by forests. Fragments of magical theory left behind by people arrogant enough to think their knowledge would survive them. Where others seek treasure, Wyse seeks understanding. The gold is incidental. The stories are not.

Though officially an archaeologist and wizard, Wyse behaves more like a wandering historian who accidentally learned enough magic to survive his own curiosity. His spellbook is packed with practical rituals, travel notes, sketches, encoded observations, and half-finished theories written in margins only he fully understands.

He prefers caution over combat, preparation over pride, and leaving dangerous places intact whenever possible. Unfortunately, history has a habit of defending itself violently.

Despite his age, Wyse remains unexpectedly agile, a strange side effect of years spent escaping collapsing ruins, angry mercenaries, and mechanisms designed to kill tomb robbers. People joke that he moves like a thief trapped inside an old scholar’s body.

They are not entirely wrong.

Travelers who meet him often leave with the same impression:
Wyse does not walk through the world like a man nearing the end of his journey.

He walks like someone who still believes there is one final discovery worth finding.
